Multiple Office Locations We have seven Midwest offices: Wichita, Manhattan, Kansas City, and Salina, Kansas; Omaha and Grand Island, Nebraska; and Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to completing work in these states, GSI has served customers in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado and South Dakota. We also maintain mobile labs that allow us to serve clients across the country.

Management Team

Charles "Chuck" Brewer is a principal geologist with more than 25 years of professional experience. He has worked at GSI since 1989, becoming president in 2004. Prior to joining the GSI team in 1989, Chuck was employed by the State of Nebraska Department of Environmental Control.

Chuck has also spent time working for several natural resources companies in Kansas. He is a registered professional geologist in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas. He earned his Bachelors' of Science in Geology from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.
James Sorgenfrei joined the GSI team in 1995 and now serves as vice president and manager of the Grand Island division. James works as a project engineer, both as a geotechnical and a materials management engineer.

He has extensive experience in laboratory testing and the coordination of drilling and field work for GSI's clients. He also helps to oversee GSI's construction materials testing operations and is a liaison between GSI and the client from project inception to completion.

James received a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He is also registered as a Professional Engineer in Nebraska and South Dakota.
J. Fred Jones has more than 20 years of experience in geoenvironmental and geotechnical engineering practice. He is executive vice president and principal engineer for the Grand Island, Neb. office.

His responsibilities include supervision of general operations as well as principal-in-charge of geotechnical, environmental, construction materials testing, and contract drilling services.

He has worked in all areas of GSIs services including construction materials testing, soils and concrete laboratory, project engineer for geotechnical, materials testing, and environmental projects, senior engineer for geotechnical and environmental projects.
Michael "Mike" Lustig serves as the senior vice president for the Iowa division of GSI. Prior to joining the GSI team in 1997, Mike spent three years at Maxim Technologies, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa and 10 years working for Patzig Testing Laboratories, Inc. also located in Des Moines. He has nearly 35 years of experience in engineering and construction and more than 30 years of experience in geotechnical and geoenvironmental practice.

Throughout his career, Mike has directed the development and preparation of geotechnical reports for new building construction, bridges, highways and dams. After earning a Bachelors' of Science in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, he received a Master's of Science in Geotechnical Engineering from Iowa State. Mike is registered as a professional engineer in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
David "Dave" Edwards has more than 20 years of experience in designing and implementing subsurface investigation programs, geotechnical engineering evaluations, construction materials quality control and quality assurance programs, environmental consulting and wetland projects. He has experience working on both public and private geotechnical, civil, environmental and forensic engineering projects. Dave Edwards also has Superfund experience and has remained active in the educational community by serving as an instructor at Kansas State University's Salina Campus.

He joined the GSI team in 2001 after spending 12 years working for Atlantic Testing Laboratories, Ltd located in Canton, New York. He is currently serving as senior vice president for GSI's Kansas division. Dave earned a Bachelors' of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University located in Potsdam, New York. He is registered as a Professional Engineer in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Pennsylvania, Vermont and New York.
Nick Wolff, P.E. is the Vice-President and senior engineer of Geotechnical Services for the Omaha office of GSI. He has 12 years of experience in geotechnical, construction testing and geoenvironmental practice. His responsibilities include supervision and technical oversight of all geotechnical operations and consultation with clients, engineers, architects and contractors regarding geotechnical-related projects. Mr. Wolff has directed development and preparation of geotechnical reports for thousands of projects new building construction, bridges, highways and airports. His extensive field observation and engineering experience has benefited clients by providing quality control and minimizing construction problems.
Robin Dornfest, CPG, P.G. is a graduate of Sonoma State University and San Jose State University where he obtained a BS and MS in geology. He has worked in the mining industry, for the federal government, and in the private sector.

Before joining GSI, Robin managed the geotechnical engineering department for CTL|Thompson's Northern Colorado Division, which included nine individuals ranging from administrative assistants to principal consultants. Prior to that, he worked as an engineering geologist for Secure Engineering, as a geologist for the United States Geological Survey, and as an exploration geologist for RNC Lonestar.

Robin has built a large client base and has had much success acquiring numerous contracts. In addition to managing a geotechnical engineering department, he has extensive experience managing and performing geologic and geotechnical investigations for a wide variety of projects.
