The Corner Store

Remodeling The Corner Store which offers fueling facilities, presented many challenges, including changing site conditions, for the owners. The Corner Store called on GSI to assist in solving the environmental issues at the site.

A Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) was implemented by GSI in preliminary efforts to remediate the site which was suspected of hydrocarbon contamination. When fumes were discovered in the drinking water at properties surrounding The Corner Store site, GSI immediately adapted to the changing site conditions and launched an expedited correction action as a quick and decisive fix to restore safe drinking water for the neighboring residences.

GSI used over excavation and backfilled with clean material as it was the quickest way to restore the property. Although not the least expensive remediation technique, the situation called for immediate results, and excavation was the best solution. Monitoring wells were installed and groundwater sampling commenced to monitor the levels of contamination. GSI scheduled the remediation work to coincide with a remodeling project at the site— this enabled GSI to share contractor resources and eliminate the need for additional closures to the store.

GSI also maintained relationships with the residences surrounding the site keeping them apprised of the stages of the project and the outcome. The community relations effort was vital to keeping the neighborhood involved in the process and informed of the contaminant reductions after remediation. The program resulted in the neighbors and The Corner Store owner to maintaining their “good neighbor attitude” toward one another.
